Secondary Education (Chemistry) Enhancement Course

In a laboratory-based environment, employing and modelling strategies that participants will use with their own pupils in the future, this programme aims to: establish a strong base of core chemistry concepts that are firmly rooted in the physical world and linked to pedagogy; enable participants to make links between their learning and that of their future pupils and to begin to develop coherent physical models appropriate for different learners in different settings; highlight the relevance of chemical concepts to everyday life and locate chemistry within the wider science curriculum through providing rich insights into physics, biology and earth science. Participants will have opportunities to: develop their skills in using standard school laboratory apparatus to carry out a range of investigations and observations; strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the materials and why they exhibit different chemical properties and behaviours; apply their understanding and knowledge in unfamiliar contexts to solve problems and generate hypotheses; increase their awareness of the fundamental importance of chemistry in our lives and identify chemical concepts in everyday applications and recognise that science is not about simply knowing a body of ‘true facts’, but that reasoning, questioning and sense-making are critical in working scientifically.
