We are already a multi-award winning business and this is only our third year.
The Depden Smallholding is run on sustainable principles, though we are not registered organic. The animals are managed on a high welfare system, with low stocking rates and ample freedom to roam. Feed is free from chemical preservatives, medicinal additives and GM material.
The courses we run are designed to share ours skills and the skills of local craftsmen. There is a emphasis on turning country crafts into skills that we can all use in our daily lives and, if desired, use as a basis for starting a business. Courses include:
Willow working: hurdles, baskets, bird pouches and garden sculptures
Kitchen Charcuterie: Sausage Making, Ham & Bacon, Preparing Game
Smallholding skills: Living the Green Life
Animal Husbandry: Sheep keeping, Pigs and Bees
Crafts: Clay pizza oven building

Do you have some land of your own that is not doing anything productive? Would you like to keep some livestock but don’t know the best way to start? Are you uncertain of the legalities or the paperwork needed? Or would you just like to experience a fun day on a working smallholding and learn new skills? This 1 day course is for you. What does the Introduction to Smallholding course include? We have designed this course as an introduction to smallholding for beginners and those still thinking about “Living the green life”.
The pizza oven is made from mud and straw and is great fun to make! Building a clay pizza oven is both empowering and fun – the oven will give you and your family good service throughout the summer and the next year. Its also very inexpensive to do, you can use mud from your garden we will give you tips on preparing it and practical guidance on making your own oven.
Our monthly supper clubs are exceptional! We know this because many of our diners have enthused over our carefully home prepared menus… it isn’t just that it is home cooked from fresh sustainable produce… it is our love of quality: we put a huge amount of time and energy into preparing and serving the food we love… which means we really do not want to just serve up a “good meal” we want you to treat yourselves.
