Carantoc Art has been setup to bring art to people in Weston-Super-Mare and Somerset.
I am an experimental ceramic sculptor and visual artist. My artwork involves the production of forms that examine aspects of movement and flow found in nature. I use a variety of natural materials that range from wood, through to clay. These are often located and recycled from my local environment - such as the beach and building sites - and combined with more traditional ceramic and drawing materials.
I spent much of my childhood alone in the countryside in rural South Wales where I developed a fascination with the patterns and shapes that nature produces. As an artist I am particularly drawn to the four Greek elements of fire, water, air and earth and am fascinated by how creatures such as birds and fish can so easily break free of the tie to the earths surface using the third vertical dimension that humans have struggled for centuries to claim as their own.
I specialise in hand-building my clay forms, feeling that a potters wheel gets between me and the material I am working with. Where possible I like to gather my own materials directly from the environment and process it into a form where I can use it either as part of a glaze or as the actual sculpture
