  • Discovering Journalism with Truro College

To me, the Access to Journalism course at Truro College (Haven House) was more than just an eye opener; it was a revelation. After just one lecture I realised how much I wanted to learn and widen my horizon. There were twelve of us, aged between 19 and 43 (I was the 43?!). Jane Stanley, our course leader, was brilliant in motivating and engaging every single one of us. I feel, it was her personal commitment and passion which convinced us that we were indeed good enough to finish and pass this course to progress and go to university to do a degree. I truly loved my time at Truro College and learned not just about journalism, but equally about team work and the necessity of compromises. Lesson and lectures were anything but boring and several journalists and other experts from the media industry visited for guest lectures, giving us a realistic insight of what we could expect to encounter, once we decided our route into the world of media. A visit to court as part of the Media and Crime & Court Reporting was an important section of our course studies, as was the writing of feature and news articles, hard news, human interest news, radio production, the design of a magazine, vox pops (short on the street surveys and interviews), interview techniques and much more. All these experiences did build our portfolios and we even learned how to apply to universities and colleges, producing an effective personal statement. I am now in my third and final year at Falmouth University College, hoping to graduate in July 2010 with a BA (Hon) in Journalism. These past years have changed my life and if it wouldn?t have been for the Access to Journalism course at Truro College/Haven House and Jane Stanley I would have never known what I am really capable of. Christian Pohle, 2006/07 student at Truro College, Haven House (and still in regular contact with Jane Stanley and the College)

This is a very useful course and, being held at an Open Learning Centre, it enables you to come whenever you can with no big commitment although most people do attend most weeks. It is a small group and is suitable for anyone with rusty school French as well as those who are a little bit more fluent. We learn using cassettes, magazines, books using all the main skills, reading, writing, speaking and listening. The first hour is usually spent doing conversation and the second using materials to improve grammar, vocabulary etc. We complete a portfolio of our work to cover the NVQ requirements but it is all done on an informal, no pressure basis.
    Student facilities ***
It is a bright, airy room with a whiteboard, TV and video, cassette player if needed. We are right next door to the snack bar which is ideal as our class is held just after lunchtime and we can pop in there in the break to get a cuppa. Downstairs is a large computer suite and resourses centre which we are able to use if required.
    Social life *****
I have been attending this class for 13 years as have several others although we welcome new students with open arms. It is very friendly and supportive and we look forward to our classes very much. We are a mix of men and women although more women mainly. We do meet socially and have all become friends. Usually between 5 and 8 students although we can go larger if required.
