- The level 2 course builds on the basics covered in level 1 and is a very helpful next step. It covers lots of ground from range planning to mark downs, wholesaling to importing. Our lecturer, Be, was enthusiastic and inspiring and provided a lot of real-life examples from her own experience and from the trade press. This gives an understanding of how the theory being learned actually works in the industry. Well worth it!

- the teaching material is relevant to many aspects of the food industry and module choices further on in the course gives you the opportunity to choose your direction. placement opportunities are excellent, in the UK and abroad. the pace of the course does however get more challenging and expecially the final year, but that is to be expected? before starting the course it is handy to have business studies A level (but not essential as I didnt), a good grounded understanding of food in the areas of cooking skills and basic food knowledge, their physical make up, some nutrition knowledge and food safety, and some idea of consumers and the food industry. some teachers are more inspiring than others and help should be taken advantage of! it wont come to you you have to go and get it. the course offers a wide range of modules which can be applied to other industries and i liked that felxibility.
- Student facilities *****
- hallam is very modern with its facilities and the learning centre and IT facilities are top class and always being updated. the kitchens are very good also amongst other practical equipment.
- Social life ***
- there were all girls on this course apart from 2 guys, so not evenly mixed. group work can be a chore...some people are preferable to others. uni is not a fashion show or a popularity contest though, some people forget that! the class sizes are reasonable and there are places to socialise and many places in sheffield to go out.

- Manchester is a great place to live - there's always something new to see and do. Always be aware of personal safety.
- Student Union 5
- A lot of events are organised, although they could be better. The union itself is dark and dingy and rather small, especially considering the volume of student population.
- Clubs and Societies 9
- There are 100s of sports clubs, although I chose not to join any. I'm not sure of others that are available as they're not advertised.
- Accommodation 8
- I lived at Hulme Hall in the first year, which had a good mix of people. There were catered and non-catered options and a cheap bar so it was easy to meet people. It was a little strict. Others are less so. Most student houses are horrible and getting increasingly expensive.
- Uni Facilities 8
- There are several libraries to chose from but be sure to get books early as waiting lists can be huge! Sports facilities are also goodbut the gyms are rather over-subscribed.
- Course and Lecturers 5
- My course was not what it advertised to be so I suggest you check it out thoroughly before-hand. There are sometimes better options in the same department. Lecturers are friendly but there is often a conflict of opinion when more than one runs each module - makes writing essays very hard! Lecturers are more laid back than A levels but registers are still taken as numbers are relatively small.
- Eye Candy 6
- Girls are hot - boys are not! (So i've been told anyway). There's an annual girls/boys off. Manchester calender. My course was very girl orientated so I would advise a mixed hall - plus, opinions change over time.
- City Life 10
- Manchester always has somewhere open. Town has venues for a host of tastes and budgets. Fallowfield & Didsbury are more student orientated but night-bus services are brilliant and cheap.
- Job Prospects 8
- Plenty of post-grad services but only a couple in fashion. Careers service is available for up to 3 years after graduation. There are prospects in Manchester but London has better options.

- UCLAN is a great Uni with an excellent business and fashion school. The option of halls were great and dependent on your budget you can get modern halls with double bed, ensuite bathroom, TV and dish washer etc.
The SU and nightlife was wicked espec the Students Union which had great nights and entertainment. Preston during the week is awesome and very 'studenty' with many student pubs offering a cheap meal. Preston itself is only a short train ride away from Manchester which is great for shopping, nightlife and culture. The uni was medium sized which I thought was great as you always seemed to bump into Uni friends in town.
Because I'm female and into fashion the only downside for me was the poor range of shops in Preston. I always caught the train to either Manchester or Leeds.
Overall I would rate my time at UCLAN ten out of ten.

- I lived in Roeburn Halls in my first year which were ensuite and newly built in 2000. In my final year I went into the private Halls Trinity which were rather expensive. Since I left UCLAN I thiki there have been many newer halls built.
If you get a houseshare in your second of third year I highly recommend Plunginton Road. Plungi was very studenty and there were parties going off all the time. It was near enough to both town and Uni.

- My 'Retail Management' course was coursework based. We had around 12 hours of lectures a week but we were expected to do lots of coursework. I still managed to work 12 hours a week at a part-time job and juggle a decent social life. It is fantastic having just 12 hours of lectures a week and if your time table is good you may end up with some full afternoons or even full days off.

- Lots of student nights during the week and excellent Students Union.
- Job Prospects 10
- I managed to find a fabulous job with fashion 3 months after graduating. Most of my coursemates have also done well and landed good jobs.
But don't expect to just walk into a job after graduation. It is very hard and very competitive. But of course having a degree is essential and a starting point. My advise is to get some work experience if you can whilst studying at University or even go for the degree option with the year in industry.

- As a prospective student entering the world of fashion, you have to be prepared to work your socks off. People who think fashion is just about drawing pretty dresses will be highly dissapointed. wherever you study fashion, you will be expected to devote your life to it and Nothampton is no exception. On arrival to the uni you would expect it to be quite laid back..the tutors get u into a false sence of secruity..and by the time its too late, you have given up your friday nights to desperatly finish your eight projects you still need to complete for tomorow!
- Student Union 4
- the SU in Northampton is pretty rubbish at avenue campus and only offers a tiny bar which has attempted to be updated but unfortunatly..not very well. the SU at Park campus is alot better, with a nightclub on campus and regular nights. saying this, its mostly school disco type things which are a tad on the cheesy side.
- Clubs and Societies 6
- from what i know, the sports teams are all very close knit...and whatever day of the week, you are sure to find a rugby boy tied to a lampost or sainsburys trolly, minus thier clothes!
but but i guess u get that with all sports teams, right?
- Accommodation 10
- Halls in the fist year were first rate, en suite bathrooms with mixed or single sex flats with internet access as an option. i had the best time in halls and they work out to be really cheap. a bonus of halls at both avenue campus and park are that they are litrally a few paces from your lectures. very safe aswell with secruty lodges being right next to the flats. The only downpoint to living in halls is that the fire alarms would be set off at least once a week during the middle of the night. This shouldn't really cause much of a problem, so long as you are prepared to meet ur fello neighbours in your pj's!
- Uni Facilities 5
- There are plenty of computers to use although the fashion department computers are rubbish. better off using the uni library or graphics rooms.
- Course and Lecturers 2
- From the first week at northampton uni, i realised that there was a distinct reputation that the fashion department worked with. bare in mind...if you have any unique-ness or innovative ideas you will probably be shot down and expected to conform to what the tuturs think is best. The tutors lack respect for students and 'fightening and rude' are just some of the words that have described the fashion tutors. Unfortunatly this is the courses main downpoint and lack of communication and poor abitilty to enthuse students really causes a low 'comunity' feel to the course. Competition to be the best (like any fashion course) is apparent, but stick to your guns when discussing ideas and dont let the tutors create your collections.
At the end of the 3 years there are 17 places for the final year catwalk and usually around 45 students are fighting fot them. if you want more of a chance in getting on..be prepared to start at 8am and leave at 8pm with little input to your work.
i have a very individual approach to my designing and did not bow down to what the tutors wanted..after all..fashion is about being unique..not conforming to the norm. needless to say i didnt get on the catwalk but i did have amazing work experience from london to holland..no thanks to the uni. so dont only set your heart on a place on the catwalk..there are bigger and better opportunitys if you are prepared to find them yourself.
- Eye Candy 5
- i would have to say being on a fashion course the girls are all very fashionable, the boys are even more so..but remember girlys, you wont have any time for boys while youv got work to do!
Go to The Soundhaus or The Roadmender for a sufficient fittie fix!
- City Life 9
- Even though northampton isnt known for its brilliant night life..it really is what you make of it that counts. regardless to how bad the fashion course was...i definatly had the best three years of my life.
If you are into dance/chart music head to Time and Envy, Hush and Rocket or even the park campus night club. But if, like me you prefer your music played by boys in sprayed on jeans with a doherty style swagger, head to roadmender or soundhaus for really good live music.
northampton is really good for new bands and is usually full of decent regular nights. its no london, but great all the same.
i would say in your first year as a fashion student you can barely manage a coupe of nights during the week if you can handle working though a hangover. second year id probably say one night a week and third year would be none! i on the other hand tried to fit going out around my everything aound my housemates..this just makes life difficult so its best to get all your drinking out the way in your first year and regretfuly leave the partying to your mates on other courses.
- Job Prospects 5
- An instant job after uni is not very likely unless you get on well with tutors. which unfortunatly, i very much doubt you will.
Over-all the fashion course at northamption is incredibly disapointing..future Gallianos and Stella McCartneys head else where. one thing i cannot stress enough is that to do fashion at northamtpon, you have to be prepared to give every single spare minute of your life..and after all uni is about meeting new people and experiencing new things..not about being locked away in your studio while your mates are out having fun!
