I first discovered The Academy when I did their 3 week summer evening course 2 years ago. I couldn't reccommend this highly enough for anyone who's testing the waters when it comes to acting or doing other short courses and in need of an intense acting injection! It was extremely enjoyable and rewarding. When I finally felt commited enough to do a full time course I knew it had to be at the academy. (Although I did my research first and went to their 1st years and 2nd years end of year productions and found them to be of a very high standard) Now, nearing the end of my first term I'm very glad I made the decision. So far the classes have been excellent and I really feel like I'm being well prepared to enter the profession. Most staff have lots of industry experience and are more than willing to share it. (and not in that awful patronising "WHEN I WAS AT THE GLOBE DARLING...." way you so often meet when studying drama!) If I had to think of one thing that makes this place stand out compared to other institutions I have done courses in, it's the teaching staff's support, enthusiasm and energy. Most of us are working full time jobs during the day so it's well needed!

Having spent all of my working life up to now sitting in front of a computer screen all day, every day, I was starting to wonder if I was I destined to do to do this for the rest of my life... Sure, it's ok for some people, but I really wanted to find something far more interesting and exciting to do with my life. I decided upon acting as this is something I was interested in and started looking around for courses. Initially it seemed that a full-time day course was the best way to train, but unfortunately quitting my day job wasn't an option for me so it looked likely that I would have to give up on the idea. However I then discovered the full-time 2-year evening course at The Academy Drama School. This was exactly what I was looking for to give me the amount of training I feel is necessary to do well in the industry and allow me to keep my full-time job so I can pay the bills. I auditioned for the course and I was fortunate enough to be accepted. I'm now in my second year and have loved every minute of it. It's taking a huge amount of commitment and effort from me (and everyone else) but I've learned so much and my confidence is building every day such that and I'm starting to really believe I can make it in this business. I feel I should also mention the only downside of this course (and I'm sure you've thought of it too), which is that, for about 30-35 weeks of the year I'm pretty much restricted to Saturday nights only to go out. The silver lining here, however is that many of the people on this course are now some of my closest friends and I look forward to seeing them every day.

  • Great Course
    St Francis Xavier College

    Course content *****
I have been attending Tap Intermediates at St Francis Xavier College for several terms now and it is a fantastic class. The tutor Kathryn is extremely supportive and enthusiastic and the other students often return each term so it is a really friendly group. Every term we learn two routines, concentrating 5 weeks on each routine and at Christmas we take part in the end of term performance. It is nerve-wracking but good to show what you have learnt and perform as a team. This class is a great way of keeping fit, learning a fun skill and making new friends and I would highly recommend it! Beginners are also catered for at the College in an earlier session so there really is no excuse not to give tap dance a try! The College is also really easy to get to if you live in Clapham, it's literally two minutes from Clapham South tube and if you drive they have a free carpark for students.
