  • Practical Course
    Cardiff University
    Robbie, November 2006
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
This was a very practical course. There were a lot of visits to the workshop during the first year and this helped me understand the principles of Industrial Machines such as the Lathe. From the second year, there were several industrial visits. My most memorable was the visit to British Steel Plant (by then already known as Corus, I think!) at Port Talbot. There was also emphasis on the business context of engineering. Law and Accountancy were also thrown in. This has helped me a great deal in my current job. Not only am I competent to handle the engineering aspects of my job, I also help the commercial department in adjudicating tenders in regard to cost and legal implications. The Mechanical Engineering Department was constantly ranked in the top five when I was there and thus there were a lot of employment opportunities in Engineering for those that chose to pursue Engineering as their profession. My department was only two minutes walk from my Student Accommodation. And the City Centre was a stone throw away from my Department. Cardiff is a lively and elegant cosmopolitan. It has the excitement of a vibrant city and tranquility of the nearby cost and countryside. The Millennium Stadium is right in the city centre for all sports fans. The Welsh are some of the most passionate supporters anywhere in the world especially when International Rugby is being played!

  • Great all round experience
    University Of Leicester
    Andrew, March 2007
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
Engineering at Leicester has been a really worthwhile experience so far. I came expecting to learn all the boring engineery stuff - and I have, but I've go so much more out of it. Most of all, I used to hate public speaking and writing. Leicester University has given me so many options to improve my skills, and now when I go to an interview, I look forward to giving a presentation 'cos I know I can do it. Easy marks. The top jobs don't care what university you're from. They have such a detailed application process so being able to give a good presentation or write a 250 word description of your proudest achievement is much more important. Leicester has given me a very enjoyable experience and put me in a position to go as high as anybody from any other university.

This is a hard complex course to do. It is the kind of course where you have to love the subject in order to justify the amount of work you will have to put in. The uni has one of the best engineering courses I have seen adn I amv. glad to be here.

  • Mechanical engineering at Bristol
    University Of Bristol
    Andrew, September 2007
    Overall rating *****
    Course content *****
Bristol is ranked as one of the top universities in the UK for engineering and unsurprisingly this means the the mech eng course is very demanding. The timetable for the first 2 years is pretty much 9-5 mon-fri, which may be a shock to any students expecting to have free afternoons watching countdown! By 3rd and 4th year the timetable is a lot more open due to the project work which you do at your own pace. Personally I found the last 2 years to be the most enjoyable, since you can work when you feel most up to it rather than having to go in for 9-5 every day. In terms of the course content, it is very much theory-based with practical work (mostly lab coursework) only accounting for a small portion of the overall mark. In this way engineering at Bristol is similar to Oxbridge, Imperial etc. While this should suit most undergrads who are capable at maths, those who choose engineering as a career because the enjoy the "hands on" aspect may wish to look at other universities.
    Student facilities ****
There are two engineering buildings, Queen's and MVB. The former is a fairly old (but recently refurbished with much needed central heating!) but has a lot a very advanced facilities, in particular the new BLADE dynamics lab. The latter is much newer and houses most of the computer labs where the PC-based lab classes take place and is usually the best place to check e-mails (it has wireless internet throughout).
    Social life *****
Anybody choosing mechanical engineering should be warned that is perenially has one of the worst male:female ratios going! However, I found this not to be too much of a problem since you meet so many people outside of the class during first year when housed in residential halls. Bristol itself is an excellent student town as it has a great nightlife and all the amenities you could need. An added bonus is that Bristol Uni's precinct is right in the heart of the city, next to numerous bars, restaurants and cafes. This helps create a real buzz in the student area, especially during term-time. The only downside to the location of the uni is that the surrounding residential areas (where undergrads typically rent flats in years 2-4) are so nice they happen to be some the most expensive places in the city. In Clifton, Redland and Cotham (the areas within waaking distance of uni) you can expect to pay over 300 per month in a shared flat. There are much cheaper areas of course, but these will probably require a bike or bus ride.

  • A broad grounding for lots of Engineering jobs
    University Of Edinburgh
    Camilla, August 2007
    Overall rating ****
    Course content ****
The teaching is good, but variable. When I was there it was much stronger in the Electrical department, on the whole. The pace depends on the specific modules and these change from year to year. Some of the lecturers are great. The degree itself is a really good grounding in a broad range of engineering, with Mechanical and Electrical aspects often complimenting each other.
    Student facilities ***
Clasrooms vary and the IT facilities are constantly improving. It's a mix of different buildings, ranging from the purpose built stone building to the prefab hut and some ultra-modern buildings. Money tends to be spent more on providing good practical facilities for labs.
    Social life ****
The E&M degree is really just a particular selection of modules, so class sizes vary a lot from year to year (there were 3 of us by the time we got to graduation). However, there are normally between 10 and 50 people on each module, depending on the year of study and what the module is, so you aren't forced to like the other E&Ms, but you do tend to get to know them really well. The atmosphere on the course varies with the lecturer, but in general you are treated as an individual, and this feeling definitely increases towards the end of the course. As with most engineering courses women are in the minority, but it's never a problem and not really noticeable until you go clubbing! There's plenty of socialising in the King's Buildings bar, and we've kept in touch.
