I thought i was useless at any craft skills but the unfailing patience, skill and imagination of my teacher changed my perspective - I started from basic knitting stitch and after one year I am now able to knit full garments! For christmas I gave my husband a handmade knitted waistcoat and it is all thanks to my teacher and the knitting course.

  • Excellent Celta course in Greenwich

    Course content *****
I thought the course was well organised and the support from my tutors was amazing. I had never taught before so as a novice the lead into teaching through observations and then 25 minute teaching practice to 1 hour teaching practice was ideal. The best thing about the course was that it was well paced, good fun, and the tutors were always ready to help. I loved the fact that they loved teaching ESOL and had so many years experience within the field. If you would like the opportunity to learn TEFL in a more thorough and dedicated way then this course is for you. I have learnt so much and I am ready to start working as a TEFL teacher. There is an opportunity to do a follow-up course but this is enough for now.
    Student facilities *****
The class room was well ventilated, and what you would expect within a college. There was an interactive whiteboard, audio facilities and a computer. There was enough space for us to do more creative lessons for students to move around or more quiet formal lessons on desks.
    Social life *****
The atmosphere was the best part of the course for me because it was warm and fun, I guess this can be based on the other students that are doing the course with you. There were 10 of us in total and we really got on. We were encouraged to exchange emails and numbers for extra support. We helped each other with assignments and also provided advice and honest feedback on each others teaching.

  • Travel and Tourism
    Greenwich Community College
    Mahsa, August 2007
    Overall rating ****
    Course content ***
Overrall this course caters for a wide range of people as it teaches basic to more complicated issues regarding the travelling world. Some of the topics do seem a bit tedious, however overall the course is made enjoyable via the teachers.
    Student facilities ***
The college resources are good with large IT rooms for student use at any time, however they may be packed at lunchtime so you have to pick your times of use. Good size library with good range of travel and tourism books and journals to help with the coursework.
    Social life ****
The college is located near all useful shops, restaurants, take-aways and bars. Therefore students find it easy to find friends and have an enjoyable experience.

the tutor was really enthusiastic, very happy to help and assist, always on time, always able to advise and always assisting us students. You set your own tasks here, and although you do get gentle prodding from the tutor about how its going, you will need motivation to get the goal met. This isnt hard when the tutor is so helpful and friendly.
    Student facilities ***
large room, plenty of space per student, smaller spot lights (optional to have on or off) which were/are very bright and good for intricate work. Blow tourch and space, acid, burnishing tool, hammers, files, saws...etc all supplied. The room itself is in a separate building just outside the victorian college based in Royal Hill Greenwich. It can get quite cold in the winter, but there are heaters to get around that- and a cafe where you can go for a tea break (if you choose to take one). You do need your own saw blades, shops in london are supplied, but the blades are also on hand via the tutor at request and at cost price.
    Social life *****
everyone in the class was really nice and really friendly- there is even the option of a christmas and summer or end of term party/meals out! We all got along really well and people are also there to chat to while you work.

The course is relevant to me because I need the course to get into university. The teachers are energetic and lively when they're teaching. They make sure every student understands before moving on to the next topic. Time feels unlimited.
    Student facilities ****
They have a decent library and a good IT facility.
    Social life ****
Greenwich is a very diverse college with lots of different cultures.

Since finishing a Health and Social Care (Advanced) course at college I was unsure of what to do next, hence my choice of a sociology with psychology degree. It definitely opened up many options for me and made me grow as a person.
    Student facilities ****
The facilities were adequate to my needs as a student.
    Social life ****
There definitely was a great element of choice. Students from all backgrounds helped to create an interesting atmosphere that teaches you about different worlds and cultures!

First teacher was really good, but her replacement was terrible - there was no evidence of lesson planning. All we did all lesson was read aloud or listen to her talk. I eventually dropped out becuase I thought it was a waste of time
    Student facilities ***
Ok, but the interactive whiteboard never worked.
    Social life ***
Other students were nice, but it was a very mixed ability course. For a supposedly A-level course, some could barely formulate a correct sentence.
  • Complete Waste of Time
Digital Art - Web Design with Dreamweaver Level 1
    Greenwich Community College
    Joanne, April 2010
    Overall rating *
    Course content *
I chose this course because I wanted to learn web design. I spent 90% of my time twiddling my thumbs while the teacher taught the other students how to use a computer. Most of them were not even computer literate to a basic level such as opening and saving files. I ended up helping them myself to try and move things along. I learnt next to nothing - a complete waste of time and money. There should be a caveat that students have to have basic computer literacy to start this course, but there is not.
    Student facilities *
First lesson of a web design course: no computers. Nobody had bothered to set them up & issue passwords. So the teacher used an overhead projector to instruct us. Pointless.
    Social life *
Not relevant as this was an evening course.
